761 Rules of Thumb and Safety Truisms: True, False, or Not Even Close?

Instructor: Richard F. Sesek, Ph.D., CSP, CPE, Auburn University, Auburn, AL
Jerry A. Davis, Ph.D., CSP, CPE, Auburn University, Auburn, AL

Description: We’ve all heard them and even used some of them, but are they true? Often these facts and sayings are presented as evidence or reasoning to support safety decisions. How close to the truth are these bits of wisdom? This session will answer such questions as, are indirect costs 3-5 times higher than direct costs; is a load held away from the body 7-10 times heavier than one held close to the body; is lifting with your knees, not with your back a good idea; and many others.
